What to see and where to shop for your photography gifts!

Art shows, books and local businesses

The Holidays are a great time to go see some shows! Here are some of our recommendations.

Wall of Lee Friedlander’s self portraits, About Face, Pier 24

Pier 24/ About Face

One of our favorite shows is at Pier 24 in San Francisco, right under the Bay Bridge. With its nearly 1000 images (about 80% from the permanent collection of the Pilara Foundation), the exhibit shows a wide range of portraiture from mid 1800s mug shots to Zwelethu Mthethwa’s working class South Africans.  It’s free but you need a reservation. The Radical Camera: New York’s Photo League, 1936-1951 at The Contemporary Jewish Museum

“The exhibit is the first comprehensive museum survey in three decades of the famed photography group’s work, history, artistic significance, and cultural, social, and political milieu. Drawing from two extensive Photo League museum collections housed at The Jewish Museum in New York City and the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio, the exhibition includes 150 vintage photographs by more than sixty Photo League members.” Included in its almost 400 members were Berenice Abbott, Consuelo Kanaga, Lisette Model, Aaron Siskind and Weegee. More information HERE.

Jasper Johns: Seeing with the Mind’s Eye.  SFMOMA

“With some 90 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints, this is a rich overview of Johns’s art — an invitation to look closely, and look again.” Information HERE.

Barry Singer Gallery

For a North Bay treat, Barry Singer’s Gallery in Petaluma is a candy store for the vintage photo collector!  Tuesday through Saturday, 11-6. Its worth the drive to Petaluma! Learn more.

Books, Books, Books

Who doesn’t love a beautiful photography book!  Here are some of Stuart’s favorites.

The Fraenkel Gallery in SF is a great resource for books. Here are a few, but there are many many more!

Keeping it local

We like supporting our local businesses, and hope you will this season as well.

WIGT printing on Miller has an on-line service greeting card service with a 2-3 day turn around. $20 off your first digital print order!

Seager Gray Gallery, a recent addition to Mill Valley, specializes in contemporary art. Joe Brubaker: Everyday Saints, a show of wood and found materials sculptures, is up through December 30th. Their previous show featured one of our instructors, Michael Cutlip.

Whats not to love about an independent book store. Book Passage in Corte Madera is one of our favorites.

Proof Lab in Tam Junction has a little bit of everything, Northern California style! Surfing, skateboarding, music, art and retail. It’s a great spot to find gifts for just about everybody.
