Images from Lucy Gray’s new book Balancing Acts: Three Prima Ballerinas Becoming Mothers will be shown at Harvey Milk Photo Center in San Francisco May 9 – June 7.

Harvey Milk Photo Center in San Francisco will show a selection of images from Bay Area photographer Lucy Gray’s new book Balancing Acts: Three Prima Ballerinas Becoming Mothers.

The images were taken over a span of 15 years during which Lucy photographed three San Francisco Ballet prima ballerinas—Kristin Long, Tina LeBlanc, and Katita Waldo—and their families. The book’s more than 100 black and white photographs chronicle and document the struggles these incredible women faced to raise their families and keep dancing, and offers an intimate backstage look at one of the world’s most important ballet companies.

There will be an opening exhibition Saturday, May 9, 1–4PM, with a book signing beginning at 2PM. Tina LeBlanc will attend the opening with her son Sasha, along with Kristin Long and her husband ballet Martin West—they will all be available to sign books. The exhibition will run through June 7.

Lucy will also give a lecture about the book at The Image Flow Thursday, June 25, and teach a workshop on creating fictional narratives with photographs starting July 6.
