In this creative endeavor, Lucy Gray will guide you through an exploration of photographs as fictional landscapes. This workshop is for photographers who like to read, and writers who like to photograph. Prepare to immerse your imagination fully. You will be illustrating short stories with photographs as a means of developing and refining your artistic voice. You will be helping one another create images and you will be commenting on work as well as hearing about your own.

You will need a camera (any camera, including an iPhone), the ability to download your images, and a computer on which to send them to Lucy the day before the second session. She will help you discover what you want to accomplish in a picture, what makes your photographs work as a fictional landscape and how to choose the subjects that are best for you.

Session 1: First hour: Lucy will show a variety of examples of photographs illustrating fiction in books including her own.

Second hour: Two actors will read “Creation,” Don DeLilio’s haunting story set in the Caribbean.  The situation in the story is as mysterious as is the outcome. The group will discuss their interpretations of what happens and how those various possibilities could be illustrated.

Third hour: Lucy will take the group to a location in Marin where she will demonstrate a way in which she would photograph to illustrate the story, directing the actors. Participants will also have time to direct the actors and/or one another as well.

Session 2: In the second session, each participant will present their view of the story verbally and the eight photographs that he or she has taken to illustrate it. Lucy will lead a discussion in which the work is thoughtfully considered. This discussion, lead by Lucy, is where all the parts of the experience come together and the learning curve of creating your fictional narratives with photographs soars!

Lucy will also present a lecture and book signing for her new book, Balancing Acts: Balancing Acts: Three Prima Ballerina Becoming Mothers September 24 at The Image Flow.

This workshop is limited to eight (8) participants.
