Introduction to Encaustics

This hands-on one-day encaustics workshop is a great introduction if you have never worked with wax and the art of encaustics before. The workshop will examine approaches to using photographs, magazine tears, tissue papers, and other objects that can be embedded into the wax. We will address heating, fusing, and manipulating wax, as well as discuss colors, brushes, and where to find materials.

Participants will be supplied with and working on 2 two-inch-thick wood panels and will take home at least two completed works of encaustic art.

Encaustics: Beyond the Basics

This workshop is designed as a companion to the above Introduction to Encaustics class. Students will be given a quick review of the basics, then will have time to explore and practice various advanced techniques. The workshop will cover layering, adding texture, masking, inscribing, and collage, as well as the application of oil sticks and pastels.

Participants will be supplied with and working on 2 two-inch-thick wood panels.

Who should take this workshop: Anyone interested in exploring other creative ways to work with photography and mixed media.

Required Materials: 

All materials are included, but you are encouraged to bring your own photographs, computer prints, papers, and any collage materials you may want to experiment with.

Pertinent details:

  • Maximum twelve (12) students
  • Participants 16 and older welcome
  • For Introduction to Encaustics, no previous encaustics experience is required
  • For Encaustics: Beyond the Basics, students should have taken Introduction to Encaustics or similar

Instructor Bio: Margot Hartford is a San Francisco Bay Area lifestyle photographer who specializes in photographing families, children, and fitness for commercial clients. While serving as a docent at SF MOMA, she discovered encaustic painting through the work of Jasper Johns. She created a small studio in her home to experiment with using wax to produce small pieces of art incorporating her photography. www.margothartford.com
